Year 1 Home Learning

Mrs Newman will be posting new tasks daily for you to complete at home.

Year 1 have loved finding out about prehistoric life during our Dinosaurs topic. They have been identifying and naming different dinosaurs, discussing and debating what life would have been like when dinosaurs were alive, exploring fossils and discussing how we know what dinosaurs looked like and what food they ate. Below are pictures of the children taking on the role of palentologists digging for fossils!

Year 1 had a fantastic time making pizzas as a reward for their super behaviour last term! Well done Year 1.

We have been working hard to learn how to add and subtract numbers up to 20. This has been really challenging but we have all been resilient and not given up. We have used different resources and drawn pictures to help us with our calculations. We are going to keep practising our addition and subtraction using mental maths so that we can apply our understanding to solving problems.

In Year 1 we have been exploring 2d and 3d shapes. The children were challenged to find hidden shapes and describe their properties.

In English, we have been writing our three little pigs narratives. The children have been trying hard to use the correct punctuation and interesting describing words.

We had a wonderful treat on Tuesday when the house captains came to do a house competition with us. We worked in small teams to produce a poster all about Walsall.

In English, we have been learning the Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. We used the talk for writing approach using actions to help us memorise the story in order to retell it. This week we have written our own version of the story with some of us changing the characters. Mrs Newman is so proud of us all for how hard we have tried with our writing.  Here is an example of some of our work this week. We are now going to focus on developing our handwriting to make our writing even better.

We have been using concrete resources to help us compare numbers. We have started using the symbols for greater than, less than and equals to show how numbers relate to one another. To help us with our learning we watched the 'Blockzilla' episode of number blocks. Please watch at home and encourage your child to discuss what Blockzilla explains.

In Religious Education, we have been learning about the Christian belief of Creation. Today we went on a scavenger hunt around our school grounds to find things that Christians believe God made. Some of our children who follow the Christian faith, confidently shared with their classmates what they had learnt at church about the Creation Story.
